You may be aware that the New York Yankees have publicly announced their intention to launch a “third-party audit” of their organization….. Where do I start?

Well, let’s start with, “good for them”! Committed, high achieving individuals and organizations, with performance expectation placed firmly on their backs, deserve this.

But let’s imagine a world where this is a routine, systematic occurrence, not an audit. Isn’t that the way it should be?

Regularly assessing the performance of your organization, in an objective, engaging manner, provides three things.

Firstly, and possibly most importantly, it builds belief. If your people (staff, athletes, coaches) experience the opportunity to provide honest feedback that they know will help create an even more productive environment, it fuels their belief that their work will drive the organization forward.

Secondly, it delivers the information leaders require to take the right steps to improve performance. Rather than relying on their own instincts, which is essential, it loads them up with a more diverse collection of information that will allow them to make even better decisions.

And, finally, it creates a healthy accountability culture. An awareness that regularly assessing performance is a part of the standard operating procedure, will lead to improved behaviour and performance.

The “audit” that the Yankees are speaking of, needs to be part of a yearly plan. We owe this to the people we lead. We owe it to those who follow us. It simply makes sense.

RW Sport Performance has worked with dozens of high performance sport organizations to develop simple, productive ways to regularly assess performance. Not just when things are going poorly, but in a consistent way that builds belief and fuels our plan to thrive!

In 2023, Hockey Canada ran five of their World Championship programs through this process, with great success!
